Book Review: A classic biography

This is a brilliant, measured piece of biography, examining the many parallel lives of Blunt, a communist traitor at the heart of the English establishment. The other protagonists, Philby and Burgess especially, are brilliantly drawn. The overall question, why he turned traitor, is left largely unanswered, and remains an intriguing mystery at the heart of the book. It is a great companion to Banville's fictionalised The Untouchable. Recommended.
