Book Review: Comprehensive study of both fronts

Concise and highly readable. Blends the strategic issues at the top with the tactical issues being dealth with in the field. Utilizes a broad range of first person accounts from American, British, German, and Russian soldiers and officers to flesh out the narrative without straying off course. It's a warts and all book with sometimes brilliant observations of the shortcomings of leadership, the petty rivalries that cost mens lives, and the heroics that led to victory. Unlike man other books, it helps you understand the whys of war. Why here and not there, why did we win this battle and lose that one, why was Russia so important to the war effort. I learned much of what occurred on the eastern front, and the terrible atrocities committed by both the Germans and Russians, and a much better understnading of the politics of the Allied policy of attempting to burn Germany to the ground. The author was a British soldier in the field during the war. While that yields many insights, he is objective enough to use that experience to improve the story without limiting the view to his own personal experience. Outstanding volume for any history buff, not just war readers.
