Book Review: A very worth sequel to "Auntie Mame"
Summary: 5 Stars
I'll just be upfront: I found this sequel to "Auntie Mame" even funnier than the first book.
At the end of "Auntie Mame," we see Mame making the acquaintance of her grand-nephew Mike, and enchanting him with her stories of travel in India. Patrick and Pegeen somewhat reluctantly allow Mame to take Mike with her on further travels, with Mame promising to have the boy back in plenty of time to start his school year. Then the story jumps ahead to Patrick and Pegeen ruminating on the fact that their son has been travelling with Mame for three years. This is used as a framing device, as Patrick sorts through his memories of his own travels with Mame in the late 1930s, when she treated him to a pre-college present of an extended holiday.
Some characters from the first book return: Mame's great friend Vera Charles is very much present, and even Dwight Babcock of the Knickerbocker Trust is back, briefly but memorably. Mame's adventures include intriguing to be presented at the British royal court; dealing with an obscure Burnside cousin who looks her up in Venice; and becoming overly-friendly with a slightly inbred Austrian noble family, who reside in tumbledown castle, aptly named "Schloss Stinkenbach."
The new edition now available includes a chapter on Auntie Mame and Patrick attempting life on a Russian commune, a chapter that for some reason was suppressed when the book was first published in 1958. The chapter in no way promotes communism; in fact, the glaring hypocrisies of such a system are on prominent display. I think our cold warriors over-reacted a bit by insisting on the removal of this chapter when the book was first published.
As I mentioned above, I think this sequel is even funnier than the first book, with Dennis' pointed remarks on the fallacies of people in general very much in evidence. Enjoy!
