Book Review: A tragic story that brings a new focus for the nature/nurture debate

'As Nature Made Him' is the true story of David Reimer, a young man bought up as a girl following a botched circumcision which left him with no penis. The baby, whose birth name was Brian, was not told that he was born a boy for many years and spent a troubled childhood, as a girl called Brenda, realising that he was different but without really knowing why. At age eleven he was told the truth and decided to live life as a man calling himself David. This is a particularly tragic story as the update in the later stages of the book tells us that David chose to end his own life in 2004.
This is an amazing book and an amazing story. Incredibly well researched, it not only tells the story of David but also that of Dr John Money, a man responsible for many gender reassignments performed on babies born genetically male but with abnormal or damaged genitals. Money is portrayed as an egocentric and arrogant individual, with bizarre methods of treatment which include showing children pornography so they establish the 'correct' gender identity. Despite evidence that his experiment was not working, he wrote the case of David Reimer up as a total success and was totally unable to cope with any opposition to his ideas.
This isn't always an easy read. A secure gender identity is something that many of us take for granted and it is difficult to fully comprehend the hell experienced by this brave man.
This is a story that will stay with me a long time. Highly recommended.
