Book Review: A beautiful story about belonging

Jinn and Viola alternate narrating this tale about what it means to belong and how to feel whole. Viola is granted three wishes by Jinn and what she wants more than anything is to have a sense of belonging but it takes mistakes and bad wishes for her to realize that feeling whole and a sense belonging are things only you can grant yourself.
I loved the romance in this story. It was incredibly sweet as Jinn and Viola started to care for one another as Viola started to see Jinn more as a friend and instead of as a genie. However, once Viola's three wishes are up, Jinn disappears from her life and Viola will have no memory of him. They begin an impossible relationship where they have to stall for time to be with one another and to continue loving each other, they have to make tough decisions.
At first when I opened this book, I thought I would just be getting a cute, fluffy story but the author really was able to capture the struggle of being a teenager and feeling alone and invisible. The story deals with issues of feeling alone and alienated from your peers in a very accessible way, making Viola a sympathetic character. I was rooting for her throughout the book and wanted to see her grow and was glad when she did. I'm looking forward to reading more from this author!
