Book Review: A Haunted, Horrific Cartoon

There seems to be two ways to adequately deal with the holocaust in a book. The first is the obvious- historical information, personal accounts, speculations and memories. The usual books on the subject treat it with a heavy tone, mixed with stories of hope and survival. Diary of Anne Frank. Night. Etc.
Pierce takes the other approach, an approach rarely taken by authors: surreal, violent mind-bending horror.
But, really, isn't that more appropriate? It shows the horrors that took place, and accents the unbelievable nature of their extremes with surrealism- which effectively highlights how hard it is for people to wrap their mind around something like the Holocaust.
It's taking something already over the top, and making it MORE so. Joy Divisions become Toy Divisions. The medical experiments lead to mutations, and the goblin nazis eat children. Bikes are made of human flesh, and everything in Auschwitz is even farther from acceptable than it was to begin with.
I can only think of two authors besides Pierce that have taken this decidedly brave approach and pulled it off: David Britton with his banned 'Lord Horror' novels, and Johnathon Littell with his massive, bleak undertaking 'The Kindly Ones'. The thing about Pierce's book as opposed to those though- this one is actually READABLE and ENJOYABLE. David Britton's work is good, but it's densely written and hard to find. Littell's book is good, but it's densely sized (I'm tempted to use mine as either a doorstop or an ocean liner anchor when not reading it). Pierce's book on the other hand, rolling in at just over a hundred pages is something everyone can manage (in size at least- not everyone will be able to stomach the content. The title alone should scare those people away though).
It's the difference between watching that Daffy Duck Nazi cartoon, or Triumph of the Will- one is for shorter attention spans, and packs its punch in a short, bitter-sweet encounter and is enjoyable to more people than academics. Not to mention the book's strange, cartoon-feel and logic- it's much more like Merry Melodies on crack after a bout of bad depression than it is a measured, serious-toned work.
Overall, this book works- here's your holocaust, here's your horror. They come wrapped hand in hand and tied together with a string of gore and toys. It's bleak and harsh- welcome to Auschwitz. You've gotta laugh at the horror- do, maybe it will help you keep your sanity.
Or maybe not.
