Book Review: OUTSTANDING!

It's a very long time since, from the moment I opened a book, I knew that this was going to be wonderful and I've read it all in one day.
There have been other brilliant books but they've grown on me rather than capturing me with the first words.
After the poetry extract on the first page, and the two quotes from the main characters, the book starts "There had been wind and drifting snow during her journey, but as darkness fell, the wind died and the snow settled'.
The story of the friendship of Astrid and Veronika begins in winter and gradually as Spring starts and the wild strawberries, a recurring motif, begin to grow, their tentative overtures of friendship blossom and they begin to tell their stories to each other.
Veronika is thirty and she was born in Sweden and then went to New Zealand where her own personal tragedy took place. She returns to her homeland to seek solace for her wounded spirit, and there she meets Astrid who is eighty, the ' village witch'.
The development of their friendship and the unfolding of their stories, at times shocking and unexpected, form the basis of this engrossing tale.
The book was published in New Zealand under the title 'Let Me Sing You Gentle Songs' and it is this expression that Veronika uses at the end of the novel.
Although some of the experiences are shocking, it is a gentle song of a beautiful friendship.
Do buy it, you will love the experience of reading it all in one swoop and cherishing the memories it gives you.
