I have been a big fan of Jay Rose since I read his work on dv.com.He writes great articles about sound for video and film, which are always informative and useful. This book, which is aimed at the full range from novice to expert, takes those articles to a deeper level.
Flicking through, some things can seem too complex but everything is well explained. In spite of the inclusion of cookbook fixes, this book is still more about sound theory (no pun intended) than how to use particular applications.
Reading this book will equip you with the underlying knowledge needed to get the best finished soundtrack. You will learn how to edit as well as how to use an editor.
Don't buy this book and expect to rescue a bad track. It will help you to recover some of it but you can't work miracles. What you need to do is read the other books before you start recording.
There is some overlap with his other books but you should treat each as a volume of the same work. If you are serious about getting good sound, then the cost is worth it.
Oh, and get some decent speakers too.
