The story is simple - distraught man loses wife and daughter in horrific accident, decides that reincarnation exists and stalks the family he believes has his daughter. Police do nothing until he kidnaps said child, who was having no issues until he showed up in their lives. Trial occurs, child dies, and suddenly, Audrey Rose is at peace.
De Felitta never makes a strong case for reincarnation in this novel. He omits a glaring fact that the parents, one of whom seems fairly intelligent and rational, would have pounced on in regards to the reincarnation fallacy that Hoover was trying to feed them - Hoover walked Ivy home from school one day and that was when all the problems began. It would have been very easy for him to hypnotize her and plant these memories in her mind.
Or, as De Felitta wants us to believe, Audrey Rose came back as Ivy, and is harming her. She must deal with the trauma of her death before she comes back, which is why she ultimately killed Ivy. So, lets go write a sequel about her returning quickly again to torment another child. Yawn.
