Book Review: First part of a great aviation history series

I have to begin this review with teling you that I really like this five part series on the history of aviation. I've reviewed all five titles to give an idea of what you can expect in each of these books. Together they give a very good impression of the achievements of aviation in it's first century. What makes this series special to me is its format of illustrating the aircraft mentioned in the text with photographs of the real thing where possible, or replica's if no originals are left. This format is used throughout the series, which means that all five books have a similar feel to them.
This particular title deals mainly with the first attempts at powered flight. In about 55 pages the period leading up to World War I is described. It includes the first attempts to fly from the deck of a ship.
The second chapter of just over 70 pages is about aviation during the First World War. It is illustrated with contemporary photo's and paintings, but also by photo's of replica's and surviving aircraft. These photo's include pictures of details, like cockpits. And the text gives a clear account of what happened in the air, and of the development of aerial combat tactics.
Chapter 3 describes the development of commercial aviation in the period 1918-1939 in just under 60 pages. In this chapter there are pictures of early mail aircraft and of special aircraft like the famous Maya-Mercury combination and the Do-X and Junkers G.38 (all just a single photo). But there's also extensive coverage of types like the Ford Trimotor, the Ju-52 and the DC-3. The text extensively deals with all of those and more.
Chapter 4 gives accounts of the lives and achievements of a number of "Great Names".
The combination of contemporary photographs and recently made photo's of aircraft in museums gives this book (and the series) a very special look and feel. In combination with a detailed text it makes the book complete. If you're interested in the early years of flight I'm sure you'll like this a lot.
