Book Review: A good resource for learning scales and positions on dobro

I've been playing lap style resonator guitar (dobro) for a few months now - I've played banjo, mandolin and flat-top guitar for many years. One thing I've found with the dobro is that when playing back-up behind other instruments or vocalists, playing from just a chordal position limits what you can do a great deal. In order to effectively play backup it's necessary to learn scales and their positions on the fretboard. Doug Cox's book Backup Dobro - Exploring the Fretboard is designed to do just that. It provides exercises using various scales and positions in different keys, in GBDGBD tuning, and leads the player through connecting those scales and positions to gain an effective working knowledge of where the notes are. It's not a "fun" book to work through in that it doesn't teach songs - actually it takes some discipline and dedication to work through the exercises. But that's what it takes to master an instrument anyway....time, focus, hard work and dedication. The CD that accompanies the book is adequate, nothing great, but it does give the student the ability to hear what the exercises are supposed to sound like. I'd recommend the book to anyone who's serious about learning how to hear and find the notes to play in all positions on the neck.
