As the story begins, psych ward patient Jane Charlotte shares the story of her experiences as part of a clandestine organization with her doctor in hopes that she can convince him of her sanity (this "interview style," more obvious at the beginning, is a bit distracting). As she weaves her web of wile about how she came to kill a man whose murder she is accused of committing, readers learn about those who rid the world of "bad monkeys." But all is not quite what it seems. There's more to the woman's story about her young adult life and eventual involvement in the organization than meets the eye. Mind-bogglingly unique weapons and high-tech methods of tracking suspicious persons' actions and interesting biblically-referenced criminal dilemmas add to the intrigue. And the convoluted story is perfectly twisted (literally and figuratively) at opportune moments, keeping readers in suspense until the last page. Bad Monkeys, with its unusual, fast-paced style is a convolutedly clever chronicle of clandestiny. The book could have done without the environmentally unfriendly plastic is used on the cover. Also good: The Constant Gardener by John le Carre, The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins and In the Woods by Tana French.
