Book Review: "An unexpected miracle"

I stopped and started on this book several times. For some reason today when I began I devoured it in a single piece. It can easily be read in a day, and probably should be for full impact. If you just read it a chapter or a section at a time, it too easily loses its force and momentum.
The story is wistful and ironic, tinged with a certain hopelessness and regret even as the characters struggle to regain all that they have lost. It reads with the same kind of beautiful sadness that 1984 (George Orwell) possesses, but with the terrible understanding that it's not nearly as fictitious. I know that sounds very depressing...amazingly it's not. The plot and description moves forward with energy and even humor at times.
The Los Angeles Times Book Review said: "An unexpected miracle -- a delicate, and often hilarious tale."
I couldn't agree more.
