Book Reviews of Basket Case

Book Review: Hysterical Novel Filled With Witty Banter!
Summary: 5 Stars

I don't usually love crime novels that are full of comedy, however, since discovering Carl Hiaasen I cannot get enough of his witty plots.

Not only does he keep the reader interested in the crime investigation he gives the reader an extra helping of dessert with his unique characters. The character depth is simply amazing.

Book Review: It was good
Summary: 4 Stars

This was a pretty good book with a good plot and some funny characters, although it wasn't the hilarious book I was expecting. It was funny in places, especially when the main protagonist pictures his own death in the morning obituaries, but wasn't consistantly creative and new.

The book feels sort of slow in places and is too long for its own good. This would have been a much better book had all of its creativity, of which there is plenty, could have been contained in a hundred less pages.

Book Review: Laugh, laugh more, and laugh again!
Summary: 4 Stars

ZANY, wacky and weird, but in the best way. I mean, how awful would the world be if we didn't have strange brains thinking up the strange characters that inhabit Hiaasen's novels?
A load of fun and a great way to spend a weekend on the couch! (And if your spouse resents that you're on the couch all weekend reading while he/she is tending to the rotting, fetid mess that is accumulating in the house, just buy him/her their OWN copy of the book and invite them to join you!)

Book Review: My first Carl, of many
Summary: 4 Stars

This was my first exposure to Hiassen's work. I first read about him on guitarist Pete Huttlinger's website/blog, where he compares Hiassen's writing to singer/songwriter Antsy McClain's work. Since I love McClain, it seemed like reading a Hiassen book was the right thing to do. Perusing the local library's holdings, I blindly chose this title. I'm glad I did. It's humorous, suspenseful, and provocative. He has a way of creating interesting characters, making them believable, and convincing the reader that these characters are worth following around for a few hundred pages.

Though I'm reading one of his more 'serious works' - Team Rodent - I'm looking forward to reading his other novels.

Book Review: Not his best
Summary: 3 Stars

I agree with the earlier reviewer, this is not Hiaasen's best book. The Characters just do not jump off the page like in his other books. I did give it 3 stars as I did finish it but never felt there was a pay off.
