Book Reviews of Batman: The Dark Knight ReturnsBook Review: A Classic. Summary: 5 StarsPeople who don't read comic books often scoff at the thought of Superheroes. "Grown men poncing about in tights," they think, "how silly." And so much comic book material does nothing to make the opposite point- that comic books are a valid storytelling medium with as much power as Tolstoy or Shakespeare.Frank Miller's "Batman: The Dark Knight Returns" is a comic book (a real, honest-to-goodness BOOK) that makes this point with every re-reading. All the familiar elements of the Batman character are there- Robin, the Batmobile, the Joker- but bolder and better than ever before- and ever since. The story finds an aging Bruce Wayne restless, 10 years after Batman's retirement, in a Gotham City that has become increasingly criminal. Haunted by the memory of his parents' death, Bruce is unable to sit idle for so long and so, baptised with thunder, lightning and rain, the Batman is reborn, beginning the final chapter of his career.
Book Review: The best comic in the world. Summary: 5 StarsThe Dark Knight returns, like everything else that Frank Miller does, is absolutely without question the best comic ever written. I think we can even forgive him for Robocop 2!
Book Review: Greatest graphic novel ever (period) Summary: 5 StarsPerhaps Frank Millars most famous work and certianly his best. A dark gritty future Batman fighting in a world that has forgotten his kind. It brings the Bat back to his roots in the night andbringsthe Joker back to his sadistic self. It also rewrote the rules on Robin introducing Carrie kelley a girl who's inspired by Batman and ends up at his side even at the expence of her old life. It and Millars batman year one set the standard for future Bat books and is now being sequaled by the just as good "The Dark Knight Strikes again" or DK2.Greatest comic book ever? You better believe it buster...
Book Review: Superb Summary: 5 StarsDespite all the talk of a vital adult comic scene there are actually only two creators really pulling it off: Alan Moore and Frank Miller who together pretty much started it all off with Watchmen and Dark Knight respectively. Rereading Dark Knight now it still reads very fresh having lost none of it's intensity or originality either in technique or narrative. The only thing that dates it as a product of it's time are Miller's pot shots at 80's American politics and the Cold War. It's a pity Miller never hit these heights again but with the sequel, Dark Knight Strkes Again, in the shops there's never been a better time to revisit this revolutionary comic. Truly excellent.
Book Review: the reason adults still buy comics Summary: 5 Stars'Comic' just doesn't apply to some of the mature and intelligent graphic novels available on the market today. Dark Knight Returns is a prime example. Here Frank Miller brings his gritty, gothic, noir style and stamps it all over the franchise. With an aging Bruce Wayne slowly going round the bend as he battles to lead a 'normal life', fighting against his conscience to turn the other cheek, the Joker is released from jail after a 'full mental recovery'.Gotham City is plagued by a new breed of criminal and soon the Batmans voice will have to be heard. This graphic novel is a landmark in the comics book industry, being one of the biggest and longest selling novels ever. With appearances from old flames, brothers in arms and the perfectly handled appearance of a new Robin, this is familiar territory in a futuristic Gotham on boiling point. Add to this the ultimate showdown between the All American Boyscout (Superman)and the Dark Knight himself (yes, the movie question on everyones lips today was answered years ago) and you STILL haven't scratched the surface. Buy it. Read it. Love it. 'Peel'.
