Book Reviews of Batman: The Killing JokeBook Review: A perfect synopsis of the Batman/Joker relationship Summary: 5 StarsI'm not sure where this story is supposed to fit in the greater Batman legend, but it pretty well sums up the relationship between Batman and the Joker, as well as providing some insights into their origins. As usual, the Joker has escaped and gone on the rampage, but this time he has decided to take revenge on all the key characters that he believes have caused his suffering - the Gordons and Batman. His scheme is diabolical - this is one of the ugliest Batman stories I have ever read - and violent. His method of revenge is really sickening and will probably leave you hoping for some severe punishment to be delivered by the end of the book. And it is - Batman is at his most savage when he catches up with Joker. But the flashbacks to the Joker's past, beautifully rendered, may in turn have you feeling some sympathy for a man who just wanted to take care of his family and ended up disfigured and insane. This book is about twisted fate and redemption. Both Batman and the Joker are victims of events beyond their control and now must live with the consequences. Buy this for great art and one of the most thought-provoking stories in comics.
Book Review: HAVE YOU EVER DANCED WITH THE DEVIL BY PALE MOONLIGHT?? Summary: 5 StarsI'm not aware of many graphic novels, with much less than 100+ pages, that leave an impression on you long after you've finished it. Haunting images, both tragic and gruesome, a Caped Crusader who finds empathy with his most evil nemesis, knowing all too well that all hell will break loose if they can't reach middle ground. And the execution of Commissioner Gordon's daughter, Barbara, that leaves her paralysed at the hands of the Joker. Yet that is still not enough to satisfy his lust for vengeance, as James Gordon soon discovers his sanity at stake.Illustrators' Bolland and Higgins cleverly interweave images from the Jokers' past into his present, and you cannot but feel his sorrow. Each picture frame will grip you from start to finish. But it is Alan Moore's writing that adds considerable weight to each character. Never having read any of his previous work, I would say it must be equally as impressive. Anyone who considers buying this will not be disappointed. It is dark, sinister, violent...and alongside The Dark Knight Returns, it's the Batman at his best.
Book Review: Essential Reading Summary: 5 StarsAlan Moore. These words alone should be enough to make you buy anything which it is written on, and The Killing Joke is certainly no exception. It is quite a short book, but this should take nothing away from the fantastic script and excellent artwork by Brian Bolland. Batman is a very dark character and this comic really brings this out and certainly makes for interesting reading. Highly recomended - if you liked 'Year One' and 'The Dark Knight Returns', then you'll love this too!
Book Review: An AMAZING BOOK you MUST HAVE Summary: 5 StarsWhat can I say Alan has done it again with such an amazing book. The book is really cool from beginning to end and would recommend this book to any one who likes marvel comics or graphic novels.
Book Review: Watch(bat)man Redux Summary: 4 StarsThe team of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbon, who combined to hit a grand slam with the now seminal graphic novel, Watchman, regrouped shortly after that and produced this examination of Batman. It's shorter, but that's the only real negative here. Moore's take on the Joker emphasizes the cruel nature of the character, and he includes a plot development here, which some of the other reviewers give away but I can't let myself do, that is shocking in how it affects characters. When I glance at a page of Gibbon art, I'm never that interested in it. It lacks the flash and smoothness of fan-favorites like McFarlane. But it is art that works in conjunction with the text to truly propel the story, and that's what a graphic work is supposed to do.
