Cesar Millan may be popular, but I would recommend anyone to look at other books by dog trainers who use 'positive methods' first. The idea of 'pack leadership' is outdated. Don't rely on this guy!Book Review: Zen for dogs!

As a professional dog balancer I would like to suggest that instead of relying on the opinions of others you make up your own mind about this book by using a methodology that was suggested by the martial arts master Bruce Lee. He said to "Research your own experience, absorb what is useful, reject what is useless and add what is uniquely your own".
This philopsophy allows you to obtain genuine wisdom and true understanding. As someone who works with dogs that have issues I have found that the "leader of the pack" style as used by both Cesar Millan and Jan Fennel to be the ONLY way to create a real and solid foundation for change. Once you are leader and the dog knows this you will be amazed at how many unwanted behaviours vanish!
Other methods can of course be applied and are effective but if you apply Cesar's methods with an open mind you will create a bond with your dog or dogs that will be the key that opens the door to the kind of relationship you have always wanted!
Buy this great book, use the principles, absorb what works for you, add your own unique touches and discard the rest!

. . .but speaking as the owner of a breed that are not interested in treats or your praise, Cesar is not old-fashioned and outdated. Purely positive works for some, not all dogs. Old-fashioned does not mean cruel. Old-fashioned means discipline and the dog working for the pleasure of learning and working. People that insist that Cesar or Koehler are cruel either haven't read their books or are misunderstanding what they're reading. I read Cesar's other book and loved it. I wish he'd write one on raising children. Maybe we wouldn't need Nanny programs on TV.Book Review: A Lot Can Be Learned

I have read both of Cesar's books and have really learned a lot from them. His techniques have impacted my dog's life. His 1st was a lesson in dog behavior and how to deal with their issues that usually lead to bad behavior. This new book helps both the dog and the human by establishing how to be the leader in your dog's life. He gives many examples of how to be a calm assertive leader as well as why this state of mind is so important. I REALLY recommend this book and the book "Understanding: Train of Thought" to all. This book is amazing, Cesar is fantastic, a lot of what is in this book can be used and applied in every day life not only for dogs but humans too. Cesar is a diamond, he has much wisdom and a lot of common sense. Both books offer so much information that is useful. If you read no other book read this one.
