Book Reviews of Beach (UK Edition)Book Review: Quick read Summary: 5 StarsFor anyone who can't get into books from the first page, read this book.I couldn't put the damn book down it was so good.
Book Review: Read it Summary: 4 StarsI was put off buying this book by some of the reviews, but ended up buying it 'cos I only had minutes before a long flight and it was right next to the till. Glad I did. Dark, gripping story mixed with thoughtful and funny reflections on travel. Provocative but not so demanding you couldn't read it on a beach, it kept me rivited throughout a 12 hour flight - though I agree some of the characters are thinly drawn. From the reviews it seems it's a book people either love or loathe, which to me means it's better than the 95% of stuff published that inspires no emotion atall. Decide for yourself, but don't wait til the film comes out!
Book Review: The Bible for the Free Spirit Summary: 4 StarsThis is defo a book for those about to travel or someone just got back. An inspiration. Try reading this the same week as Angry White Pyjamas, you will not know where to turn...We all want to be fit and all think we have this in us... Wayne
Book Review: Simply a book one can not put down. Summary: 4 StarsIf the best books put the reader into a spell until they have finished; this is one of the best.To say it is written for back packers is to say Conrad wrote for Steamboat captains. 'The Beach' is a lovely and simplified re-write of 'Heart of Darkness' (Conrad) in which Garland re-creates an exploration of humanity which is easy to relate to and highly captivating for a modern and wide audience. Readers may note that the hero is traveling into his mind as he travels to the beach. Also, that their is no particular catalyst for the break up of the society. It was not stable in the first place. One of the most entertaining books around.
Book Review: A book you will be unable to put down Summary: 4 StarsI read this book after my flatmates told me how excellent it was, and to be fair it really was quite addictive and I found myself having to prise the bbok out of my hands. However, although the story itself is tempting, backpackers on a secret idealic island just off from Thailand, and brilliant for a bit of escapism. I could not say just what it was that kept me so addicted, maybe it was the constant nagging that something was about to happen or the constant annoying questions my mind kept hurtling at me like 'Don't these people miss Jerry Springer?'. Anyway, although I felt the initial 'waiting for something to happen feeling' was dissapointed on a number of occassions 'The Beach' is still one of the best books I've read (maybe it was the mysterious hold of Mister Duck) and would recommend it to anyone needing a bit of sun and utopia lifestyle(for a while at least!!!)
