Book Reviews of Beach (UK Edition)Book Review: A book that you simply can't put down Summary: 5 StarsFrom the second I started reading The Beach I found myself captivated, not a book I had chosen for myself I felt apprehensive but lost that feeling immediately. For the time that you read the book you are drawn into the world of The Beach, a utopia too good to be true. The ideal world that many people today seem to be searching for. You become drawn into the world of the island unable to put the book down to imagine yourself in a world different to that of The Beach, until you finish reading and put the book down. Garland has proven himself to be an author able to captivate even the most apprehensive reader and to keep their attention and imagination until the time comes that the book isplaced to one side, closed, having been read from cover to cover.
Book Review: This Book Rocks!! Summary: 4 StarsThe Beach was one of the best books I`ve read so far, its got everything from love, holiday (especially in Thailand), drugs, emotion, you name it! I think Leo has got another winner by being the main character Richard... hope the film does not spoil the excellence of the book...
Book Review: Lord of the Flies for the late 20th Century Summary: 4 StarsWithin a few lines Alex Garland manages to get the reader thinking - how on earth!!! If you've ever slung on a backpack and been to Thailand you will empathise with the lead character in moments. Everything he sees and feels makes one think that Garland must have been in your head. Having been to all but the final destination in this novel I was struck by Garland's ability to get the descriptions of the people and the places spot on. It's a fabulous unputdownable read somehow unmarred by (the) ending
Book Review: Really good... Summary: 5 StarsI Think that this is a book that really captures the imagination of the reader. I have personally been in the same situation, on an island of the coast of Thailand. The story line was great and defently worth a read....without fail.
Book Review: I'm still waiting for "it" to happen! Summary: 2 StarsI hesitate to run against the weight of opinion in these reviews, but I found this book to be highly over-rated. The book is well-written and the writer is perceptive and has a good sense of humour. However, I must have missed something because I kept waiting for "it" to happen and was left totally dissatisfied. A couple of other reviewers have hinted that the book would really appeal to people who have back-packed extensively throughout South-East Asia and it is perhaps true that these many people may be the book's best audience. Many other people will not find enough spark.
