I liked this book very much and I think it was because I have never read a book by Katie Dicamillo. I enjoyed this book because you learned a lesson about life at the end. Also it is a learning experience for Opal, the main character. It is a great children's book, I think! I can kind of prove it. My next-door neighbor Kelsey is ten and she is reading this book in school. I ask her to tell back to what happened and she explained it. She told me almost every important event that took place. So that is how I know that she understood it reasonably well. It is not a difficult book to read because I read it in no time!
This book is about a girl named Opal who just moved to Naomi, Florida. She doesn't know anybody and is not familiar about her surroundings. Her mother left her at a young age and never came back. Her father is a preacher that is also the reason why they had to move. She meets a few people and makes good friends with the neighbors. Opal learns a lot from the people at church and starts to value her life out. She also learns quit a bit about her mother. One day in the grocery store she finds a dog and claims him. And then at the end he is nowhere to be found...were did he go...read to find out!

"Because of Winn-Dixie" is the best book I've ever read, next to "Gone with the Wind." It's full of emotion, sorrow, love, and hope. Opal went to the Winn-Dixie shop. When she was there, she saw a dog that trashed the place. Opal claimed that it was her dog and she named it Winn -Dixie. She lived in Naomi Florida. Opal's Mom disappeared and Opal and Winn-Dixie can't find her. Will Opal find her Mom? Read to find out.
The author's message is It's okay to make friends even if you are scared of them. Also never give up no matter what. It is on our class's top 10 list because it's exciting. Also because it is full of emotion.
