The book Becoming Naomi Leon was a book about a young girl's life and how to cope with having a not so typical life. She does not live with mom and dad with a brother a dog in a white fenced house. She lives in a trailer park with her loving grandmother affectionately called Gram. She does have a little brother. He is a smart boy Owen but he does have physical disabilities. Her life is a good one besides the fact that her dad left her and Owen and the mother is only around when she feels like it. We all have "those" relatives in our lives that show up at odd times begging in an obvious ways to let them "borrow" money or for a place to stay and Naomi's mom is that relative. Reading the parts with the mother made me very sad; especially the part when Naomi's mother showed up and Naomi had no idea who the "lady" was (Leon pgs. 18& 19). Being a mother myself I could never imagine treating my children like disposable items. A mother usually has some connection to her children wanting to care for them before caring for herself, in that since I feel very close to the character. This book is about a young girl finding herself knowing what she wants out of life and what she should believe in. I feel this book was easy read and good to open up a window to children to get them to talk about their home life. This a great read aloud story that the teacher can read to the students. This book I feel would bring a lot of dialogue and feelings to discuss within the classroom, the teacher could also share her personal feelings to so that the students would be more inclined to share.
