About a quarter of the way through the book, I kept thinking "am I missing something? Did the NY Times reviewer read a different book?"
In a word, the book is dreadful. The worst offense, to me, was the author's tin ear for dialogue. It was jarringly out of place and unrealistic and will make you roll your eyes because really? No one talks like that.
In addition, the two main characters are so unbelievably bland that it's hard to care whether or not they ultimately get together. I was especially bothered by the depiction of Holly. She's so one dimensional that it's impossible to understand why everyone (and the protagonist Peter, most of all) is in love with her.
The only interesting part of the book, as others have mentioned, is the "character sketch" of Julia, Peter's wife's stepmother. That's the only part of the book that actually kept my interest; I ended up skimming the rest, hoping that the end result would redeem the rest of the book. It didn't.
It took me a while to get through the book because I would put it down and then have absolutely no desire to pick it back up again.
In sum: don't waste your time or your money.
