Book Reviews of Behind the Smile: My Jurney Out of Postpartum DepressionBook Review: Validated my feelings and gave me hope Summary: 4 StarsAs someone currently going through PPD, I found this book very comforting and helpful. OK, so Marie's an entertainer, not a writer--big deal. I applaud her for having the courage to "air (some of) her dirty laundry" in order to help other women who experience this horrible condition. I was extremely impressed by Dr. Judith Moore's section of the book and plan to try her recommendations. As someone else said, Dr. Moore's section alone is worth the price of the book. However, it is Marie who introduces us to Dr. Moore in the first place and Marie's "image" that's selling the book to many people, so Marie's contribution can't be discounted.
Book Review: All that money, all that help, and still PPD.. Summary: 5 StarsMarie O. was brave to write this book. It is easy to look at priviledge and think it is a cure to all problems. But Marie shows that no mom can count on being exempt from PPD. In fact, reading her book should demonstrate that neither friends to pitch in, previous pregnancies, or financial bounty can completely ward off PPD. Also, the Dr. Judith Moore section is worth the price of the book! I recommend the book for that, even if someone does not want to read about Marie O. I watched Donny and Marie as a kid, but did not even realize she was still "active." This book gave me much more empathy and respect for her. Although I do think, in the end, she (like many of us) still has a lot to learn about taking care of herself. PS: To those bad reviews I've read here, my answer is: Her story is just as valid and important as that of the next person. It does not have to be worst case scenario to be important. And it is not less so because she is famous. In fact, her fame helps to "get the word out."
Book Review: She's only human...she suffered too...a MUST read!!!! Summary: 5 StarsWhenever I have seen Marie on television, she always flashed that big bright smile of hers. I am impressed by her candidness in speaking about her struggles with postpartum depression. It is a very real thing, and a person's celebrity doesn't keep them from suffering from it. Unfortunately, whatever a celebrity does puts them in the limelight, for good or for bad. I especially loved the part where Marie and her mother had the conversation in the motel room. Her mother's experience and concern was a turning point in Marie's recovery. I was impressed also by the medical resources and other information that Marie put at the end of the book. She has successfully brought to light a formerly taboo subject, and it is a MUST read for any woman who has or is going to have a baby.
Book Review: This book will have a strong impact!! Summary: 5 StarsI am a male. Therefore I have not suffered "post-partum depression". However, I have suffered from clinical depression during most of my teenage years. I read this book, and it touched me, moved me, and I can say it was a very inspirational book. In many ways, I understood what Marie was experiencing, what she was going thru. Depression is depression, there were a lot of similarities between what her experiences were, and what mine were.I recomend this book to men and women!
Book Review: You will laugh and cry- and be surprised too Summary: 5 StarsMarie's book made me laugh and cry.My heart went out to her over the problems she has experienced over the years. Many of us must have thought what a perfect life she has, but like so many of us that sometimes give others that impression, we all sometimes hide "Behind the smile".We all feel pain, whoever we are. This book is very touching and full of good encouraging advice for people that have had, or are experiencing similar problems to Marie. How Marie has managed to juggle a full career and seven children is incredible, but one of the things that comes over in the book is that if we stop and listen to our inner voice and stop ignoring it we may have a happier life. Trying to please others all the time and suppressing our pain will only make it manifest itself in other ways. Marie has learn't so many lessons through her depression and shares them with the reader. Her good sense of humour and anecdotes are very funny to read. I hope she now has time to spend with her adorable children and family and I thank her for being so frank in her book and helping others who may be experiencing similar problems to her. You will not be disappointed in this book-once you start reading it, you won't want to put it down. My love and best wishes to you and your family,Marie. ps. Donny's book is also very highly recommended
