Book Reviews of Behind the Smile: My Jurney Out of Postpartum DepressionBook Review: I Wish I Had This Information When I Experience PPD Summary: 5 StarsI highly recommend this book for any woman who is even thinking of having children, and especially women who think they may be experiencing PPD. When I experienced PPD after having my first child, I, like Marie, had no idea what was happening to me. About half way through the book, I started thinking that the book was sounding whiney, but by the time I got to the part where Marie finally made the decision to take care of herself, I just about stood up and cheered! I now think it's necessary to understand how her busy lifestyle and background contributed to her PPD, and why she reacted the way she did, and didn't get help sooner. This book could be a real godsend to a woman who is experiencing PPD, and isn't sure what it is or where to get help for it. I really wish I had the information this book contains when I had PPD, but thank God other women will. Marie...thank you for having the courage to not only get help and take care of yourself, but to then take the time to write a book that would benefit many. Because you have spoken up publicly, many women will not have to suffer in silence with PPD. I cried as I read most of this book, as it was like reading my own story in many ways. You have only become more beautiful as you've become more real, Marie. May God continue to draw you closer to His heart, and bring more healing in your life for His glory.
Book Review: Journey Out of a Living Hell Summary: 5 StarsMy heart goes out to Marie Osmond. As a man, there is absolutely no way that I could possibly fully understand what she has gone through. No man can. Her story is absolutely horrifying in that she was forced to endure so much suffering without any visible help being available. Ms. Osmond writes with candor as well as humor and I feel confident that readers will benefit from her sufferings. Dr. Judith Moore adds a very informative section at the close of the book that brings much needed knowledge and help to a very serious condition. I hope that more men will read this book so that they might be of some help to the women in their lives who will go through this devastating illness.
Book Review: Excellent--Could not put down Summary: 5 StarsThis is an excellent book for anyone who has been through or is going through PPD. Some people want to put down Marie Osmond and other stars for writing self-help books, and it is really sad that it takes someone like this to make people realize that this is a problem. I have been suffering from PPD for 2 years now, and I thought I was crazy until I read this book. It is very informative, and lets you realize you are not alone. There is a section where her Doctor speaks about treatment for PPD, she gives you a list of ways to treat it. Test you can ask your Dr. to perform, medications that can be used. Anti-depressants are not the only types of medications that can be used to treat this horrible disease. She informs the reader you can be treated through vitamins, herbs or homeopathic treatments and you are even given the names and places where you can order by phone or online if you choose to have herbal or homeopathic treatment. As a matter of fact, I ordered my first shipment today, and I hope I have a turnout like she did. Shorter rating- Thumbs up Marie. Excellent Book could not put it down, as a matter of fact I stayed up all night and read the entire book.
Book Review: Not as good as the hype... Summary: 2 StarsUnfortunately, this is a poorly written book about a very serious subject, one that I am intimately familiar with. Unfortunately for those of us who have battled severe post-partum depression, this book does not even come close to truly getting our point across as to how brutal it can be. The majority of the book is spent in an apparently self-serving foray into her entire life. The post-partum depression is almost treated as an afterthought. I realize that events throughout her life played into the PPD, as did mine, but there was WAY too much book space devoted to those early events. When she does get to the PPD, it doesn't really seem all that bad...maybe she's not a good enough writer to portray its horrors, maybe she just didn't have it a bad case of it. In my opinion, it's more of a disservice to publish it--in the press, her PPD was hyped to the point where I thought it was really bad, but this book doesn't back that up.From the standpoint of someone who's a professional writer, it's pretty poorly organized and written. She needed to have a ghostwriter help her on this project--Marie couldn't pull it off on her own. As someone who has had very severe PPD (I lost my marriage and my child because of it), I would advise people that if they choose to read this book, read it knowing that it can be MUCH worse than she lets on here. It can be truly horrible, and trust me, this book fails to make that point...
Book Review: I too suffered from PPD... Summary: 5 StarsAfter having my daughter I had a bout of the baby blues. After a call to my doctor and a reassurance that this was only the blues I relaxed a little, but when the blues didn't go away and became more profound I began to worry. The funny thing is is that no one talks about PPD and if you mention that you're "down" people look at you strangely. "Snap out of it" they say, "this should be the happiest time of your life."Ms. Osmond is completely frank about a very painful time in her life. After reading her book, I realized that this was something that just overcame me, and that it wasn't because of something that I had done intentionally (besides giving birth-LOL). Her honesty makes this book absolutely believable which at times can come across as whiney, but these were actual feelings that she described. Also the section by Dr. Moore was very informative. It described the symptoms of PPD, those who may be more prone to it, herbal supplementation, as well as dietary changes and other information written in laymen terms. Kudos to Ms. Osmond for being famous and sharing something extremely personal. I urge anyone who has dealt with PPD or not to read this book. If more people were informed, maybe those who suffer may heal a little faster and not have to go to the extreme that Ms. Osmond did, or heaven forbid, the Houston Mom did.
