Book Reviews of Bel CantoBook Review: An unlikely but riveting story Summary: 5 Stars
This was an original and, in its way, inspiring story about friendship and love, despair and hope. Six years after I read it, the characters remain alive for me. How many books do that to a reader?
Book Review: Animated story, skilled writing Summary: 4 Stars
Finished this novel only 10 minutes ago! It is an animated (even silly, if I may be allowed that observation) story, but the writing is excellent! I read with pen in hand and marked some of the phrases I wanted to refer to when discussing the book at a group gathering next week.
Patchett's writing (I've only read this one book, so far) reminds me of John Irving a little bit. Her story is a little less intricate and moves along more quickly, which makes for a shorter volume. However, I am interested enough to have already looked up reviews of some of Patchett's other works and will probably read them, in time.
Good read, unless you have more pressing uses for your time. I'm ambivalent, but feel as if reading Bel Canto was not exactly wasted effort!!
Book Review: Awesome! You won't be able to put it down! Summary: 5 Stars
This small book is a wonder - a beautiful character study and a story that grabs you from the first sentence. The author's attention to detail is wonderous, yet the story never bogs down. I loved it all, but must agree with some reviewers that the ending was a bit of a let-down. High recommendation for book discussion groups.
Book Review: BOOOOOORING! Summary: 2 Stars
This book took me quite some time to get through as I found it to be very boring. The friendships formed and new roles that others learned to take on while be held captive was interesting initially, but at the same time, the same things continued day after day after day of being held hostage. I thought about not finishing this book as I had been reading it for about a month, but thought that may be there would be a great ending...I was very disappointed with the ending as it sounds like other reviewers were. This book is not going to be a keeper on my shelf.
Book Review: Beautiful Summary: 5 Stars
As a singer, I was intrigued by this book, but kept putting off reading it because I questioned how there could be logical continuity between a singer and terrorists. But then I read "Run" by Anne Patchett and quickly desired to read more. Patchett's writing is pure music. The relationships in this story unfold like a true romantic tragic opera and I both hastened to the end, while putting on the breaks because I did not want it to end. I highly recommend this book.
