Book Review: Disappointing

My wife and I, retired college professors, are spending 7 weeks in a rented flat in Prenzlauer Berg in Berlin. Every night we read furiously, going back to Dussmann's once every two weeks, to load up on more books on Berlin--Nazi period, DDR and Stasi, holocaust, war, etc., including fiction. This book looked like a real find, but I was terribly disappointed. I thought very few of the stories really captured or intuited Berlin, and many could have been connected to any large urban area. In excerpts, or above all in really good short stories, you want psychological complexity, a knowing "sense of place," and the conviction that these tales are metaphorical extesions of Berlin itself, or that Berlin reveals some of its essence in them. I found little of that. Also, too much grunge scene, pieces that feel like they first appeared in alternative newspapers.
