Book Review: "Darkness does not always equate to evil, just as light does not always bring good"

Fledgling vampyre Zoey Redbird is settling in well at the House of Night, a finishing school for young people undergoing the Change from human to vampyre. But for all the rollicking good times she has with her gang of friends and her crush on an assistant professor and vampyre poet visiting the school, she has started to discover that things in the House of Night are not what they seem. Her mentor has started to show signs that her kindliness may hide something more sinister, while her sworn enemy manages to earn a small amount of Zoey's sympathy. And when several human teenagers suddenly vanish and the police suspect some connection with the House of Night, she discovers she must use her talents to get to the bottom of what's going on -- at the risk of testing her new relationships.
I may be an older reader, but I love everything about this series: the characters, their complicated relationships toward each other (which goes beyond the nice girls/mean girls dualism into something more close to what happens in real life), the vampyre magick. I especially love how, in a weird way, the whole series addresses those tough issues of growing up and changing from a child to an adolescent to an adult, which can be just as weird and unsettling as becoming a vampyre would be: becoming your own person, stepping outside of the simpler ways one has known, testing one's boundaries and challenging one's limits.
