Book Review: A good start

This is the first book of the Highlander books. I thoroughly enjoyed it, though I read some of Karen's other books first. Hawk is fascinating and delicious and Adrienne is incredibly fiesty. The book establishes things that happen throughout the the series, such as the appearance of the Tuatha De Dannan, the Fairy. This is the only book that I've read of Karen Marie Moning in which the lead male is not "magical" in some way. There is magic in the book, but he isn't a Druid or an immortal or a fairy. He's got to survive on his good looks and charm. Well, he succeeds.
Adrienne is a great match for Hawk because she does not cower or easily give in to seduction. Hawk is the kind of man who is quite sexy and knows it, which can be downright irritating when he uses it against you! Because of past trauma involving a rich boyfriend who turns out to be a criminal, Adrienne has sworn off "beautiful men". So she keeps her feelings from Hawk and rages at him most of the time, instead.
I found the book fun, but I have to say that I enjoy Ms. Moning's later books more. In her future books, she does not rely on the technique of having the heroine hate the hero and fight tooth and nail with him throughout the book. While they may have differing goals which cause conflict, they are not cruel to one another. I don't know if this cruelty is something that was included in the novel by suggestion of the editors or if it was something that the author was working out in her mind in the first novel.
This is not to say that it's not a good book, because it is. I just fell in love with Karen's books because she never HAS to use that technique (of the characters being cruel to eachother in order to supress their attraction or acheive their ends) and when I read this one, I was mildly disappointed. Still, her skill as a romance writer is top notch and this book really sets up the scene for all of her other books. You see foundations being laid here which will become threads of later books.
This story also features a character named Grimm who appears in To Tame A Highland Warrior. That was the first of Karen's books that I read and is excellent. There's still a little bit of the fighting and taunting in that one, but it's toned down compared to this book. I recommend that if you get this one, get the second one too so that you can have a fuller story.
Another fascinating character appears in this book: Adam Black. He is the fairy who appears in most of Karen's other books and is quite dynamic and sexy in this one, although quite mischevious. You may not be taking his side in this book, but you will be in the later ones... He gets his own fuller story in Immortal Highlander.
I highly recommend getting ALL of the books because they are like interlocking puzzle pieces. Each piece gives you a fuller understanding of the tapestry that Karen Marie Moning has created. When you just read one, you miss out on all the before and after that happens in the other books. A whole history happens in these books that is completely unique to this author. Dive in and be fascinated!
