Book Review: ...the sequel of the year...!

A long year has passed since Alexa Daley defeated the very man who not only threatened, but attempted to bring down her beloved Bridewell from within. A year that has found her another year older, and still longing for the adventure that she experienced the previous summer. Now, at the ripe old age of thirteen, Alexa has returned to Bridewell, her thoughts full of the mysteries that could be awaiting her arrival. The walls have now fallen, and now a new evil lurks around the land. A threat that could mean death or slavery to the people she calls her friends (and faux's). And with this threat, arises a new source of adventure for the oft-times bored Alexa. An adventure that will put her back in the good graces of Odessa the wolf, and Murphy the squirrel, as well as her old pal Yipes; and introduce her to a barrage of new characters who will help her on her quest to defeat this new evil, and bring peace, once again, to Bridewell. However, the adventure is not so much as...an adventure, as a battle to the death. A battle that is much greater than Alexa's life alone, and one that will bring her face to face with a sinister evil, and a sinister force of strange forms, whose goal is to bring darkness to the land Alexa has grown to love. Now, with the help of her friends, Alexa must venture farther out of Bridewell territory than she ever has before, befriending ravenous dogs, and confronting haunting giants and bats who could leave her lifeless, in an attempt to defeat evil, and bring peace back to her beloved land.
THE DARK HILLS DIVIDE won a place in my heart from page one, featuring adventure on every page and a lovable array of characters who were too good to resist. BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THORNS, however, has brought that love back, tenfold, featuring even more adventure than before, and introducing new characters who will grow on you from their very first introduction. As before, Alexa is her same brave self. She has aged a year, and is now even more interesting than before, contributing more to the plans than she did in the previous novel, and holding a firmer place in the army of protectors who plan on saving Bridewell. Her ability to keep a smile on her face through all of the turmoil that surrounds her is admirable, and her love for friends (both new and old) is refreshing. The characters surrounding her, from the oft-times aloof Odessa, to the chatterbox squirrel, Murphy; and the always entertaining Yipes, to a selection of new characters whom you'll have to meet for yourself, each provide a humble, hilarious personality that will easily leave readers laughing on the floor, and gripping the edge of their seats in sheer suspense, equally. Carman has created the sequel of the year...a surefire can't-miss novel!
