Book Reviews of Big Girl Knits: 25 Big, Bold Projects Shaped for Real Women with Real Curves

Book Review: *Some* beautiful patterns, but not pleased, I won't buy it.
Summary: 2 Stars

I found a copy at the library and I was excited when I first found it because of the sweater on the cover and the title. I immediately grabbed it and began looking. My FIRST impression was there sure was ALOT of cleavage showing! I thought, man...do they think that all of us big women and girls like to show off our breasts. Many of the styles were like that; too much emphasis on sex.

SECOND, There WAS attention to detail, but I'm a beginning knitter and I wanted a nice sweater, not a tank top. There was a tank top, a rectangular shawl, and maybe a coat that looked like I could do but not very attractive , just plain and a bit ugly. As far as the shawl goes, you can get that from any book. The coat was just big, plain, and ugly. A coat with a simple cable pattern would have been much more tasteful.
Among the patterns I DID like, they were too difficult. Perhaps my knitting experience just isn't up to par with my tastes, never the less I can not knit the ones I liked w/o help.

Thirdly, I don't like it when they don't tell you the weight of the yarn they used. I guess we can figure it out if we experiment with needles and various weights but why not make it easier on us ?

On the bright side, I did like the fact that the athors let us know which of the sweaters were for those of us who had big breasts, bottoms, or bellies by putting little icons at the top. My favorite sweater was a tunic with four cables going up the front. Very well done. I also like the ribbing at the neck and the gussets at the underarms. Nice attention to detail, but for someone more experienced than me.

There are two books I would like to reccamend for beginning knitters who are big women: The first is a book by Elizabeth Zimmermon called KNITTING WITHOUT TEARS. In this book the athor teaches you how to make her designs using YOUR OWN measurements. You can go on from there and design your own sweaters. You also can use any yarn you would like with her designs. It's a classic that is well worth the money. I was blessed enough to find mine at a library book sale for only $.50-$1.00.
The other book I would like to reccamend is KNITTING IN THE OLD WAY-This book has desgns and techniques from ethnic sweaters like Arans and Ganseys, if you like that style. Also, again, the book starts you out using YOUR OWN measurements, not a size-but your porportions. Also, it teaches you how to knit in the round. Here is a quote I like:
"Knitting in the round, This piece of information is essential: the simplest way to increase speed and simplify intricate stitches is to knit in the round whenever possible. Garments with complicated shaping that are knitted in flat sections, later sewn to make body-fitting tubes, are the work of the yarn companies and professional designers. Two-dimensional plans fit well on paper, as written patterns. But for many reasons, the knitters of old used other contruction techniques."

P.S.I'm currently planning on knitting my first sweater using my own handspun yarn. I WON'T be using this book or any book like it (big girl knits).Knitting Without TearsKnitting in the Old Way: Designs and Techniques from Ethnic SweatersKnitting Without Tears: Basic Techniques and Easy-to-Follow Directions for Garments to Fit All Sizes
