Summary: 5 Stars
This is one of the best 3 or 4 factual books I have ever read. Its subject matter - the Holocaust suffered by the Armenian people during the late years of the Ottoman empire - is frequently harrowing, but I still could not put this book down. The author's very personal technique - he shows how he came to a knowledge of the Armenian Holocaust through his family - prevents this from ever becoming dry historical narrative. This is not, however, just a family memoir. The author is obviously well-versed in history too. It's also quite illuminating about the experience of being a second-generation American, with a family background apart from most of your generation.
Far too litle is know of the Armenian Holocaust, and it is to the great shame of Turkey that they refuse to acknowledge it. This book makes a significant contribution to the subject.
