Book Review: Colonialism is stupid - but funny

Evelyn Waugh can be read like Wodehouse's evil twin. He puts his idle rich and noble characters in jeopardy but instead of having their valet get them out of trouble at the end, he tends to kill them. In this book, Seth, emperor of Azania, Lord of Wanda, etc., etc. BA from Oxford, tries to apply English systems to country that already has its own political way of doing things that is blithely ignored by all colonialists. The book begins with a coup in which everyone is scheming to eitehr get off the island or steal the treasury or a little of both.
The rest of the book is a comedy of manners as British imperialists fight with native Africans and opportunists for power. Scenes include finding the "rightful heir" in an abandoned monastary, dinner parties where everyone insults everyone else and a birth control program that sells birth control to a populace that wants many children.
THis is an evil and mischievous book full of humor and tragedy. There are a few too many cannibalism jokes but for the most part, this is Waugh at his cruelest and funniest.
