Book Reviews of Blood Games

Book Review: Imagine , boring Laymon book
Summary: 1 Stars

Worst Laymon book . Don't start with this one or , even if you're a fan , feel free to skip . Lots of talkative , boring detail . Very little payoff . If you 're a big fan , I guess you could check it out . After all , it's still Laymon . But pretty boring and lame . Been a big fan of his ever since I found out about him , love his books , but this one just was boring and took too long .Bad Laymon book , if you can believe it . Not worth reading .

Book Review: It Is What It Is
Summary: 4 Stars

I was not very impressed with the first Laymon book I read, The Midnight Tour. Now that I've read a couple of his books, though, I seem to enjoy them more. Laymon, more than any other horror author, has sort of a 'learning curve' to get through to be enjoyed. I think that Blood Games is a much better introductory novel of his to read than the Beast House stuff.

The characters are believable archetypes and serve the novel very well even if they're not particularly original. There's a zany filmmaker, a model, a regular girl, and so on. With five main people in the novel of the same sex, sometimes it's hard to distinguish, and Blood Games suffers from that at times. Overall, though, it seems to work. The sense of foreboding that dominates the book

Blood Games is a fairly well-written horror novel and, though it moves along particularly slowly in parts, definitely is worth a shot. Laymon has a unique style - very 80s pop horror, a la King and Koontz - and the formulas he uses work sometimes and don't work in others.

As with Midnight Tour, though, there are definitely some problems with the novel. The flashbacks are almost wholly unnecessary and serve only to characterize all of the women. But, by the time you get through the second flashback, you have a good idea of who's who and ultimately feel yourself skimming them. I certainly did.

Book Review: Just when horror couldn't get any campier...
Summary: 1 Stars

No, that's an innacurate description. True horror is far from campy. Richard Laymon might be highly acclaimed overseas, but I doubt he'll receive that reception here. This is, by far, the WORST book I have ever read. Someone mentioned that it was fast paced..what??!! The only fast thing about this story is the speed in which all five females remove their clothing. The way Laymon describes the constant nudity is more sickening than any of the gory scenes in the book - which are humorous at best. B movie fodder. The dialogue is totally unrealistic, the relationships are unrealistic, the flashbacks (all 8 million of them) are just plain ANNOYING and not even worth reading. This book is not worth the $6.99 cover price. Had I already read it, I wouldn't have accepted it for free!! Sorry all you Laymon fans, but if this is the kind of writing we have to look forward to, I think I'd rather take my chances in the woods with the likes of Jason or Leatherface...

Book Review: Laymon PG13
Summary: 3 Stars

Great story but not a typical Laymon read. Not that I only read his stories for the blood and gore, but I found this one lacking in both. Reviewers that are saying too much blood etc. in this book must not have read his other works. I have read about 12 of his books now and this one was probably the worst. Too many flashbacks made reading choppy and were insignificant to plot. But its still worth reading if your a Laymon fan.

Book Review: Laymon's Weakest Book
Summary: 3 Stars

Richard Laymon has delivered us the masterful "In the Dark" and "Island", but unfortunately "Blood Games" is no masterpiece. Too many flashbacks interrupted the pace and tension of the story. Many of the characters engage in actions that go against their characteristics and seem quite unbelievable. This is not a book to start if you want a good introduction to Laymon. It's mildly enjoyable, but give his other work a try because he's still one of the top 10 horror writers of the last two decades.
