Book Reviews of Blood of Innocents: The True Story of Multiple Murder in West Memphis, Arkansas

Book Review: A Sad Story of Three Boys Lost forever and Three Older Boys who did it!
Summary: 3 Stars

This review is based on the book itself. I don't have any knowledge regarding the West Memphis Three. Please remember that I do believe they are now innocent of the crimes. This review again is based on the book itself.

I don't know much about this case until I got this book about it so I am going to keep an open mind.

Damien Echols was truly disturbed before the horrible triple homicide of three young boys in West Memphis, Arkansas. Damien and his two friends and accomplices, Jason Baldwin, and Jessie Misshelley who was diagnosed as mentally retarded with a very low I.Q. was reluctant to take part and he helped incriminate Jason and Damien.

Even though Jessie's story has more holes in it, he does implicate them. The book is rather shoddy because it does give graphic detail while it also gives us endless details of the lies among the investigation. In the end, three young eight-year old boys were treated worse than animals by three older boys who should have known better.

Damien's writings are quite interesting and he could have had a writing career if he wanted too. I didn't know much about Jason Baldwin who pleads innocent and Jessie who would end up first talking out of guilt. The three authors (funny how things come in threes in this book), do their best to convey the area of West Memphis, Arkansas and Marion County.

I feel sorry for everybody involved. Damien is an example of how the system both works and fails. The system that institutionalized him in mental hospitals should have kept him there but didn't. The system that prosecuted him for his crimes succeeded. I will always wonder why the mental hospitals let him go without constant supervision and how Jessie and Jason came under his spell. In the end, three boy are lost forever and another three young men are paying for their crimes.

As for the actual case, I haven't read much else about this case so I am going to keep an open mind. After watching 48 Hours episode on the case, I want the reader to know that this review is based on the book and it's contents. I don't go out and research about the case. I know that this case and the trial is still being questioned and I hope the truth will come out and the persons guilty are found. Even the parents of the victims now have doubts about the West Memphis Three and I agree with them on this case.
