Book Reviews of Bloodsucking Fiends

Book Review: Quick and totally hilarious...
Summary: 4 Stars

"Bloodsucking Fiends" is totally unlike anything I have ever read. I have quite a few vampire books, but this one was completely original. It tells the tale of a woman named Jody who is attacked one night and wakes later only to discover that she has been made into a vampire. Deciding that she needs a human servant to help her and take care of her during daylight, she gets together with a young melodramatic wanna-be writer named Tommy. Together the two of them are involved in some wildly hilarious situations.
I dont read many male authors, so this was new for me and quite a treat. Christopher Moores writing style is unbelievably clever and funny. I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it.

Book Review: Something Anyone Would Enjoy
Summary: 4 Stars

Whether you're a connoisseur of vampire books or a virgin to the sub genre, this book will tickle fancies you weren't even aware you had. It's an odd little book with more humor than romance and more quirk than horror, but this should please even the pickiest of readers. I only do a bullet review ever blue moon (and I've yet to see a blue moon, mind you), but I feel one coming on. Let me break it down...

THE WRITING: Christopher Moore starts of "Bloodsucking Fiends" in the midst of some very odd happenings. The first scene is centered around a bizarre character who isn't introduced at all; it might seem a bit jarring at first to not understand what this character really is about, but things become very clear if you just stick it out a few pages. You'll be glad you did, because the prose flows liquidly across the pages like its coming straight from the neck of a vamp-victim.

THE HUMOR: Strange situations centered around strange characters. There's a relatable writer, a Kung Fu dude, a bum/Emperor, more than one vamp, a tough-guy gay cop, a not-so-tough-guy straight cop, a necrophiliac (thankfully his scene is short), immigrants who want to marry a man for citizenship, and a couple of guys who will bronze anything. Sounds like a recipe for campiness, sure, but the thing is this; it all makes sense within the story. And when that harmony of humor and believability happens, the end result is very, very good.

THE MYTHOLOGY: Not touched on very much, but interesting and different from what most modern vampire series show. Some things that were introduced as major factories in the mystery were left unexplained (why one victim was reduced to dust but the rest weren't), but overall, Moore had a great handle on his version of the vampire mythology.

THE PLOT: The plot was well-planned and the set-up was great, though the climax and the ending came off a bit rushed. Everything is wrapped up rather quickly, making me feel like I missed a little something. However, that's okay, because there is a sequel (You Suck: A Love Story) and, if it's anywhere near as good as "Bloodsucking Fiends," then I'm on board.

8/10

Book Review: The secret life of...
Summary: 5 Stars

In the dark hours of the evening, creatures roam seeking out a way of life. They are scary and care little for others not of their kind, they are... the night crew at the supermarket. Throw in some vampires and a young would-be Indiana writer and mix with Christopher Moore's light humor and you have a successful book. Tommy Flood hooks up with involuntary vampire Jody and the exploits begin, along with the bloodless bodies that keep showing up around their home. I especially enjoyed the Animals and their ventures in the Safeway during that 12-8am shift where you can refine your skills at turkey bowling. There's also the body in the freezer and the Emperor of San Francisco with his cohorts Bummer and Lazarus. It's a fun filled romp through San Francisco and a lesson in what to do if your in love with a vampire, not to mention a handy way to deal with your snapping turtles.

Overall, great book, it's one of those that flows so evenly and quickly you will go through it almost too fast. Highly recommended and thoroughly enjoyable.

Book Review: There once was this vampire that walked into a bar.....She said owch

As someone that is trying to get back to reading for pleasure... a few weeks ago I picked up Lamb. I was blow away by the sense of humor that Mr. Moore used to fill in the gap in the biblical tale. Well done. So... I was hungry for more. Checking the bargain listings (what can I say, I am cheap) I found Bloodsucking Fiends and You Suck. I saw that they were related tales and so click click... Amazon.com sent me my next pieced of Mr. Moore.

I read it and I must say I haven't downed a book that quickly in a LONG time. I read Bloodsucking Fiends in about 4 days for me that is outstanding. It is a testiment to Mr. Moore's ability to keep the story flowing. I didn't feel like I could take a break, I didn't want to!

I love the premise, the love, the passion, the jokes... books got jokes people. It was entertaining! Books shouldn't take so much work to enjoy and Mr. Moore does an excellent job of writing a story that doesn't take so much work to get through. It is full of substance and truly a great read.

I look forward to reading the next book, You Suck, which I am sure... won't suck at all. Thank you Mr. Moore!

Book Review: Two days
Summary: 5 Stars

That's how long it took m to read it. Having read both this and the sequel "You Suck" (which I also highly recommend) Moore has placed himself high on the list of my favorite authors. I was laughing out loud the entire duraton of the book. Don't wait. Read this now and to avoid disappointment get a few of Moore's other books at the same time so you're not waiting.
