Book Reviews of Blue-Eyed DevilBook Review: LK redeemed herself Summary: 5 Stars
I hated Sugar Daddy. I thought it was one of the most boring books I've ever read so I was a little hesitant to read BED. I am glad I did because it was an amazing read.
Book Review: Liked Sugar Daddy better Summary: 3 Stars
I would give Blue-eyed Devil 3 1/2 stars. The reviewer who gave Blue-eyed Devil 2 1/2 stars was right on in some of her remarks. I agree it is weird to enjoy a book and can't put it down, but at the same time be disappointed.
I liked the spousal abuse plotline and was glad when Haven finally got it together and left Nick. Though, it's natural to wish she would have left sooner, Kleypas was able to show how a strong person could stay. That Haven faced an equally abusive boss and just took it while in therapy and after having left an abusive life situation was over the top and it bugged me also. Vanessa was more of a caracature of a villain.
I also agree that Hardy, throughout the majority of the book was more of a generic hero. I liked how he pursued Haven, but it wasn't until the end where the depth of his character was revealed and he became interesting. A little too late and it was rushed. I thought the declarations of love and proposal were bit of a letdown. I was hoping for more there.
But, what really lowered my rating, for me, was the passages of explanations. There were the explanations from the therapist about narcissism, explanations about rigs and reef process just to name a couple. It seemed to interrupt the story for me and it was a little boring.
On the other hand, like I said, I liked it ok and couldn't put it down. I love Kleypas' books and thought this was not as good as so many of her others.
Book Review: Liked it better than Sugar Daddy! Summary: 5 Stars
Lisa Kleypas definitely has succeeded in deciding to do contemporary novels. Even though I loved the flow of Sugar Daddy and the style of writing (the setting description and characters)I just felt there wasn't enough of time focused on the love story of Liberty and Gage. I also was SO disappointed that Liberty and Hardy were not the "couple" but Blue Eyed Devil made up for that. There was just the right amount of tension between the Hardy and Haven and it is a definitely a page turner. There was a subplot of domestic abuse with Haven's first husaband that could have resulted in Kleypas "softening" Hardy's character too much and taking away any traces of "alpha" male but this didn't happen at all. Kleypas created a great balance between "strong and dominant" and tender and patient that created a believable love story and great characterization.
I finished the book in less than two days. It is fast paced and great for beach reading. Don't miss it this summer!
Book Review: Lisa Kleypas CAN write an amazing contemporary...another success! Summary: 5 Stars
I surprised myself by loving Kleypas' predecessor to this story, Sugar Daddy. In falling in love with that book, I also fell for this book's hero Hardy Cates. I highly recommend reading Sugar Daddy prior to this one so you can have better background on the characters (you won't be disappointed).
I was so wary of Kleypas writing contemporaries and I am such a huge fan of her historicals. However, she has very nicely and very successfully transferred that writing talent to contemporaries in both Sugar Daddy and Blue-Eyed Devil. The accuracy with which Kleypas writes in Blue Eyed Devil about emotionally abusive relationships is almost scary - right down to the conversations. I kept thinking, my God, how could anyone write this so well who didn't have first hand experience - but I guess she did amazing and detailed research. The hero often left me breathless in this story as well. This is also such a good read for anyone who has ever been in an abusive relationship, a bit therapeutic in its nature. One real triumph is that the reader is not left overwhelmed by the ugliness that takes place. You still love the characters and are happy with their good fortunes. This is a definite read and I can't wait till the next in this series is released (Smooth Talking Stranger)...I've already preordered mine - guess there's not a much bigger compliment than that.
Book Review: Lisa is just getting better and better Summary: 4 Stars
I really enjoyed this book and the one before it, "Sugar Daddy". The story will keep you up past midnight. She delves into the subject of spousal abuse which is rarely written in this Genre, but should be in my opinion.
Very good, Lisa, keep it up.
