Book Review: Very valuable for beginners

This is a great book. The task of buying a boat is something almost any boatowner will face, yet there are very few books written on this subject. Not only does the book cover a neglected subject, but it also is well written - it's a quick read but I repeatedly come back to it as a key reference. The information is not excessively detailed, but sufficient, and most of it works in practice.
I am buying my first boat and I have very little boating experience from before. For me, the checklists and procedures explained have been very useful. For example, the book tells you which things to ask on the phone. This allows me to gather fairly good information of any boat for sale, without even visiting the seller.
I have learned some conversational moves that can get the seller into a bargaining mood. This might save a few hundred bucks on a good day, but one needs to realize that the amount of bargaining room is not universal. Some boats indeed may have 30% or more of air in their price, but if you are buying a wanted brand, 2nd hand and in good condition, when the economy is booming, the bargaining space could be less than 5%.
There is a quick checklist provided for almost any aspect of the boat: engine, interiors, hull, electricity, trailers, sea trial... It will help you identify and assess any problems a 2nd hand boat might have. This can save you a lot of money - or at least you feel much more confident when shopping for boats in person.
This book is written from an American perspective, so you need to adapt some things to European conditions. For example, the negotiation/shopping process has some differences on this side of the water. However, most technical information is pretty universal. The book also includes discussion of boat types, but this is cursory. Although it's important to know what kind of a boat and brand really answers your needs, there have been better and more detailed books written about this.
When you consider that you'll pay thousands of bucks even for a used boat, spending some time and money on this book will probably save itself back many times. You are probably going to buy another boat a few years down the road, so it's better to start practicing now, with a good handbook to accompany you.
