Sydney, twenty-nine, divorced and widowed, takes a job as a tutor for the teenaged daughter of Anna and Mark Edwards, spending the summer at the Edwards' family cottage on the New Hampshire coast. Part servant, part family member, Sydney finds her duties loosely defined. Julie Edwards doesn't consume much of her day, so Sydney is free to take long walks and body surf the coast. Everyone seems content in their summer euphoria, Mrs. Edwards distant, yet civil, Mr. Edwards tending his amazing rose garden at the edge of the sea; meanwhile, Sydney slowly heals from the sudden and unexpected death of her husband. But when sons Jeff and Ben come from Boston for a weekend visit, the delicate balance of the family subtly shifts.
Therein lays the crux of the drama: the brothers' attraction to Sydney as well as a long personal competition of which the tutor is unaware. Falling precipitously for the charms of one brother, Sydney finds herself in an awkward position within the family dynamic. The misadventures of the beautiful, innocent Julia bring all together for a time, but even a resolution of that drama fails to heal the breach for Sydney, who learns firsthand the dangers of impulsive behavior and misreading the language of love. While this isn't one of Shreve's finest novels, the author's deft touch with language rises above the material, precise and rich. Much like the accessible prose of Alice Hoffman, Shreve has a talent for observation of the minutiae of life, the subtle twists and turns that appear inconsequential, yet have lasting effect.
