Who should read this book: fans of Carol O'Connell (obviously); mystery lovers; and everyone who enjoys an extremely well-written book with interesting characters and a great plot.
This is another book where 5 stars are not enough. I couldn't put it down and when I finished, I wanted to start at the beginning and read it all over again. The first sentence hooked me: "A batty old man of the cloth had once described the Hobbs boy as a joke of God's: an archangel of the warrior cast and a beacon for women with carnal intentions." That one sentence, in poetic fashion, tells you a lot about the protagonist Oren Hobbs and makes you wonder what kind of trouble such a man will find himself in.
Some writers of popular long-running series seem to lose their way when they write for different characters. Ms. O'Connell does not have that problem. This is her second non-Mallory novel ("Judas Child" is the other) and it is fabulous.
The book opens for the reader bit by bit like a bud unfurling into a flower. It starts out with deceptive simplicity: Oren has come home without notice after 20 years and someone leaves a human jawbone on the front porch before dawn his first morning. The family housekeeper, who has been with the family since Oren was a boy, tells him "Your brother's been coming home -- bone by bone." The mystery naturally is who killed his younger brother Josh, who disappeared 20 years earlier when Oren & Josh went into the woods and only Oren came out. The process of learning the answer is full of great characters and excellent writing. The pace is fast enough to keep the reader wanting to keep reading but slow enough to drop little treasures along the way. One such treasure is the repeated observation that nobody in town ever goes to the library -- the reason for which comes out much later in the book.
This book is so good it makes me want to tell everyone they have to read it. I hope this review convinces you to do so. You will not regret it.
