Book Reviews of Bonjour Tristesse

Book Review: A Quick but good read
Summary: 4 Stars

This tells the story of one girls summer as she "comes of age" The book feels up to date in many ways. The girl's widowed father prefering to "be a pal" to her as opposed to real parenting, which would involve dicpline and punishment is very much what one encounters in many thiry something (with kids) households today. The images of nature and moods are poeticly portrayed without the narative losing any of its tension. This book also avoids all the cliche usualy associated with this theme. There is none of the self importance of an anais nin story and none of the airport romance novel scenary sometimes encountered in a collette story. You don't have to be into French literature to appreciate and enjoy this and its avery quick read.

Book Review: Brilliantly written
Summary: 5 Stars

Its hard to imagine Sagan was only 18 when writing this story, as the language is beautiful! I would definitely recommend this short read!

Book Review: Essential French Literature
Summary: 4 Stars

Any lover of the French must read the coming of age tale of Celine. Written in 1954, Bounjour Tristesse was novel and took on issues of young love and jealously that seemed ahead of it's time. Now, the book may feel a bit passe, but for understanding the author and time it was written-- it remains a classic.

Book Review: Excellent Read
Summary: 4 Stars

I read the book about 10 years ago, so I can only write in general terms. When I first read this book, I was as young as Francoise Sagan was, when she published the book. It impressed me. During our adolescence, we go through some unreasonable difficult emotions, which Sagan put in words nicely and freshly. The love between father and daughter, the daughter's jealousy toward her step-mom-to-be, and teenage love... everything was beautifully written. I also enjoyed the imaginable sceneries throughout the book.
