Book Review: Biting satire takes on the Boomers and politics

Christopher Buckley ("Thank You For Smoking") may be the top satirist in modern America. Coupling a savage wit and a gift for tapping into the bitter strains of the modern zeitgeist, Buckley tears the blinders off our eyes and forces us to confront our most blatant hypocrisies.
In "Boomsday," Buckley takes on the nation's twin crises - looming financial catastrophe and an utter absence of leadership. Interestingly, both can be laid at the doorstep of the Boomer generation - that self-righteous, entitled, presumptuous lot that has defined American culture since the 60s.
Our heroine is Cassandra, a gifted, zealous "PR Chick" who blogs - yes, blogs! - about the national credit card debt the Boomers are so eagerly passing along to Generations X, Y, and Whatever. Early on, her encouragement only sparks the occasional defacement of a gated community or private golf course, but nothing really serious is going on.
Until she hits upon a brilliant idea - Voluntary Transitioning! Boomers can do for their country what so many of the Greatest Generation did for them - sacrifice themselves for the greater good. Under Cassandra's idea, Americans will get massive incentives to kill themselves at an advanced age - say, 70 - but before they drain too much from the national treasury in the form of expensive entitlements.
A silly idea, but one that starts to gain traction in Buckley's crazy political world.
True, "Boomsday" sometimes spins a bit out of orbit as the subplots pile up, but for the most part this hilarious novel stays right on course. Challenging, semi-profane, and not for the faint of heart, this book should be required reading for every Boomer out there who's counting on Social Security, Medicaid, and any number of other government handouts to supplement their upper-middle-class retirement to Coral Gables or Scottsdale.
