Book Reviews of Boot

Book Review: "Outstanding"
Summary: 5 Stars

This book is extreamly good if you have any intrest in the United States Marine Corps. It gives a great amount of information on what boot camp is all about, I highly recomend it!

Book Review: A "sanitized" view of USMC bootcamp
Summary: 2 Stars

I went thru USMC boot training from Aug-Nov 1985, and this book followed a platoon about 6 months after. Its chronology of bootcamp for this era is correct, except we went thru 12 weeks of training instead of the 11 week cycle shown here. We also trained with the M16A2 service rifles in 1985. The "insider's view" that Cruz portrays is still VERY "censored" and provides a somewhat cynical view of supposedly "watered down" and "low stress" training for this and future generations of Marine recruits. NOTHING could be further from the truth! The "rules" that he quotes from the training SOP are misquotes, intentionally implying inferior quality of Marines that graduate from both MCRD's in comparison to prior generations. Yes, physical abuse is banned from toay's training regiment... just as it ALWAYS has been! Yes, there is more oversight involved in the training in comparison to the prior decade. But the Marines from the 1980's and forward have MORE than proven their mettle in combat and in training and leadership roles. Of all of the services, the US Marine Corps is the least politicized, socialized and desensatized! This book would leave the reader with a totally different opinion of the true grit and strength of our beloved Corps. For those of us who endured it, we beg to differ...

Book Review: A MUST READ FOR WANNABES
Summary: 5 Stars

This book is beyond fantastic... I'm 14 and have been pressured to not be interested in the Corps but I stand my ground. As I said a MUST READ for future Marines. SEMPER FI!

Book Review: A Snapshot of the Lives of Marines in Basic Training
Summary: 5 Stars

"Boot" begins with the bus ride that marks the last day in the lives of several men as civilians. It then describes the transformation of these people, not too different from you and me, first into tormented "recruits" and ultimately into proud Marines. Those who stay with the program, that is, as many leave, both voluntarily and involuntarily. Da Cruz gives insight into the challenges faced by Marine drill instructors in making this transformation happen. He also compares the modern "boot camp" for the USMC to the nearest equivalent institutions in earlier times and in other countries. In the end, those who survive are transformed forever. They will never be the people they once were as new recruits, ever again.

Book Review: A nice intro to the U.S. Marine Corps
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a nice introduction to the U.S. Marine Corps. I heard so many horror stories from some recruits and then you watch Gomer Pyle and you wonder about what is actual fact. Although this book is dated, it shows the eleven weeks of training that U.S. Marines have to go through in order to enter the Corps. Discipline is the number one concern of all those who enter and succeed. If you don't have discipline, you won't succeed. I was also enlightened about the physical, mental, and emotional forces that mold a Marine.

I know the Marines have changed. The author states that they changed for the worse and are not as tough, but I view some of the restrictions on the drill instructors as good, since they make them act the part of authority figures. The U.S. Marines are not a business, but would you want a sadistic DI using four letter words to mold future leaders. I don't think so.

This is a good overview of the Corps. They are better for the changes, even though the author does not think so. I wish this was updated to include the final physical march that a recruit has to go through.
