Book Review: ...he sighed like a sheet of paper slipping under a door.
Summary: 5 Stars
This is a very short novel, well-written and quite humorous. I assumed from the opening pages that the narrator was going to be one of those insufferable, obnoxious queens that have to put down everything and everyone, but I quickly grew to like him and his voice. For one thing, he is very poetic. There are some great similes. And the one-liners are great. "There, but for the taste of God, go I." Ya gotta love lines like that. There's even a sexual index that tells you on which page a certain act is mentioned. Very clever.
The life of a young Chicago call boy has been made very interesting here. At times, it seems just too safe and clean, but then we do get vivid descriptions of the seamier (steamier) side of things and it becomes more grounded in reality. As with many other good novels, the characters are so interesting that the reader wouldn't mind getting to know them and hanging out with them.
I'm not sure if "brusing" is some exotic gay sex-slang I should know about or if it's just a typo for "brushing" or "bruising." The author does a have tiny problem with "affecting" versus "effecting."
The movie version is out and available, and I'm tempted to try it as well, just to see if the actors look anything like what I imagine.
