In Boy with Flowers, the voice, contained in a hollow body, cries to be heard. What comes out is not a rant or a howl, but a song, musical and haunting, and it pervades instead of punctures. All of the poems sing, carrying us to internal worlds more real than this one. The world of this book is filled with nature, but it is not bright or pastoral. Instead it is full of twilight, storms, turbulent waves, dying flowers, and things not where they should be. Nature here is menacing and relentless, it provides no refuge, answers no questions. The poems repeatedly evoke rain, mist, the sea, glass, breath, and mirrors. All of these are changeful, shifting, reflecting, unstable. Reflections are distorted by other reflections. Something reflected in glass is reflected again in water. The speaker's own reflection (identity) is never concrete, but constantly distorted and transformed by other's perceptions and the speaker's own surprising turns of memory and perception. There is almost never an "I" in these poems, but always an eye, tuned to the universal experience of being cast out of eden, and salvation comes only through compassion.
