Brian's Winter Essay

The book is Brian's Winter by Gary Paulsen also the genre is fiction. The setting takes place deep deep in the wilderness of Canada. Where a great deal of lakes and creatures live and are located. The seasons that occur in the novel are Fall and the cold Winter. The place he ends up in is by a decently sized lake surrounded by more lake and forests of many shapes and sizes. He stays close to the lake because of the frightening fear of getting lost. He settles in by three rocks that seem to take the shape of a rectangular shape that form a shelter. That he sets camp at and calls it home for now. He is many miles from the closest civilization.
The main character name is Brian Robison. He's a young kid that is Fourteen years old and is stuck in the wilderness of Canada alone. But he slowly learns and many things from past experience, television, and what he has seen in stores to help him survive. With that kind of knowledge he has a chance of surviving or getting rescued. He made spears, arrows, bow, and many other weapons and tools that he used to hunt and also to defend himself from the animals. He might not be the strongest man but he knows how to kill big game.
Some main events that occurred was when Brian killed the moose that weighted about seven hundred pounds. Also when he got a pet skunk called betty that saved his life. When he discovered how to make snow shoes, arrow heads, and clothing out of animal hide. When Brian hears gun shots but their really trees that are exploding at night.
Some quotes are "I'm fat" when he eats so much that he was gaining weight instead of losing it because he had lots of food and everything he needed. Another is "Great day" He makes a war bow he practices with it and goes hunting he shots two animals he gets so excited that he got a lot of food and calls it a great day.
The book is as I said is a great book on a five star scale I would give the book a four star. I enjoyed how I learned a lot about survival and the wilderness also. Another I learned a lot about Gary like he like the wilderness a lot and outdoors. Another is he ran away from home because it was rough at home so he joined a circus. The writing style that Gary chooses I mostly like especial how he give very long descriptive and vivid. Also how he paints an image in your head. But I dislike how he sometimes can't get to the point and takes too many pages to tell on event that is not important.

Brian's Winter

Have you ever been in the wilderness? Have you ever tried building your own shelter? What about your own weapons or clothes? Well in this story Brian Robenson has to do all of that. Gary Paulsen makes it feel like you are actually in the wilderness with Brian. Brian's Winter is a very descriptive novel so you can understand it very well. Gary Paulsen has written tons of books, but I think this is his best one. You can also read the sequel to this story Brian's Return. I think the main theme of this book is always be prepared for the worst, I say that because Brian did not know that he was going to be trapped in the wilderness and he was not prepared.
The main character in this story is Brian Robenson, a thirteen year old boy. Brian is a very intelligent kid, he makes his own shelter clothes and weapons. I also think he is a nice kid because he feels bad about killing the animals. But most of all I think he is a very brave kid, I say that because he has been in the wilderness alone for over 95 days and he does not get scared. I also think he is sort of funny because he made up a game called the visiting game, it is where he goes and talks to no one but imagines that his mom is there.
The most important event in this story is the plane crash, I think the plane crash was the most important part because that is how he gets in the wilderness, his plane crashes into the pond. Another important event is when he makes his first arrows because that is what he hunts with. One last important event is the first time that it snows because then he knows that it will be cold so he could start preparing for winter(like make clothes, gloves, and shoes).
My reaction to this novel, well it was a pretty good book. There was only one thing I did not like about it, and that is that I don't think a thirteen year old boy would be able to survive in the wilderness for that long or I don't think he would be able to make all of his clothes and weapons and shelter.
In conclusion, I think the book would be a little better if he was not there for so long, because I don't think he would be able to survive for that long. The Genre of this novel is adventure. Brian has to go through the wilderness and try to live trough all the troubles that he has. In the beginning of the novel Brian is there for 54 days and Gary takes us through the book day by day, "I had never thought I would be there for this long, after the plane crash that marooned him in the wilderness he had lived day by day for 54 days"(Paulsen 1). I think you should read this book if you like adventuress stories, it is a very descriptive and good book.

Brian's Winter
By Gary Paulsen
Review by Krystian Ustupski
I've never visited the thrilling cold world of the Canadian Wilderness, but the book Brian's Winter, and especially the author Gary Paulsen made me visualize it and experience it's beauty. A horrifying plane crash isolated a teenage boy from the rest of the world and left him all alone in the wild forests. The story is being told from a 3rd person view who explains the character's survival in an area where there is no mercy for the weak.
As you probably figured out, Brian is the name of the main character that you will be reading about. Trying to survive in the Wilderness was a huge test for this young boy who never experienced the woods or life on his own. Brian knew that if he wanted to stay alive he had to use his personal qualities. His great will to learn kept him going, experiencing the wilderness and looking for tips, his imagination helped him a lot when it came to thinking problems. Also if it wasn't for Brian's hard working character he would have no chance in trying to stay alive.
As mentioned in the introduction Brian survived a plane crash, which is a beginning of this boy's adventure. The pilot of the plane died due to heart attack which was the reason of the crash. At the start Brian has a real hard time trying to adapt and get to know the wilderness. It takes him a while to do that but as the time passes by he learns new tips and skills that will be massive in the fight for survival. Brian finds items in the survival pack but as they run out he needs to find a way to create weapons and other items that he needs. There were also times when he had to fight with his mind and not with the cold or the animals. "Coffee," he said, while sipping the hot water, trying to trick his mind."(Paulsen, 32)
Brian showed his intelligence a lot of times in the book, by marking the days, by learning from the animals or by making sure he always had plenty of food. But he also had made some mistakes in the wilderness. "Hey - get out of there" he yelled and kicked the bear that attacked him and was close to killing him."(Paulsen, 65) He also didn't take seriously the signs that the nature gave him about the upcoming cold. Would he pay for it? I guess your going to have to find out!
The fabulous action and the mystery of this book were the reason why I enjoyed reading it so much. I enjoyed the author's writing style that was easy to read and understand. I think Gary Paulsen's knowledge about the wilderness and about survival made this book easy for him to write. Gary would be the first person you would want to ask about life in the forest since he has lived in the forests of Minnesota for a long period of his life. Did Brian survive? I bet that's the question that is going through your mind! If you want to find out the answer, you will have read this fantastic book

The famous author, Gary Paulsen, is the author of the novel, Brian's Winter. When this novel begins, Brian is in the northern Canadian Wilderness. It is fall, but as the novel goes on, it gets colder and grows into winter. This novel is a survival novel. Brian is going to have to survive in the winter if he wants to live.
The main character in this book is Brian Roberson. He is a 13-year-old boy. He was an average boy before the plane crash. As the novel goes on, Brian uses his past knowledge to help make useful items that is vital for him to survive. One of the items Brian made was a vest to keep him warm. I am a retard. He made two vests out of animal skin. Another item that he made were snowshoes that helped Brian walk. He made them out of trees. He then made a bow and arrow out of wood. Over the novel, I could see that he has become more confident in himself.
Many important events occurred in this novel. The most important event that occurred was the plane crash. If there were no plane crash then Brian would not have been stranded in the Canadian Wilderness. Another important event was when winter arrived. Brian had not been through anything like this before. It was freezing cold and he had no place of warmth. Cheese is yummy. If he was at home, he could use the fireplace or the heating system. However, he was not at home. Killing animals was very important because he would survive with food. One of the biggest events was when he killed the moose. The moose was a large animal and he had food for a while.
In Brian's Winter there were two quotes that I thought were important. The first was "A great weight. Something heavy on him." That quote was when Brian had killed the moose and the moose fell on top of him. He had plenty of food because of that kill. Another quote was "I'm fat." Brian said that quote because he had plenty of food on Thanksgiving.
Gary Paulsen was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He is the author of many survival books. Some of his famous books are Hatchet and Brian's Winter. I thought that this book was good. Gary Paulsen kept me interested in every chapter.
