Book Reviews of BrokenBook Review: A worthy read Summary: 4 Stars
Addictions and dysfunction come in many forms, but all point to one thing, ultimately, we are all somehow broken. Toward the end of the book, after detailing the sometimes harrowing five year journey through treatment programs and relapses, Moyers writes about his interaction with a doctor who asks him "What do you want me to do for you?" He didn't know. After years of having the answers, a plan, the next option, he was stuck. It all came down to this: "My sick soul stopped guarding the door, and the soul of faith found its way in. God had been walking alongside me my whole life, but I'd hidden away from Him in shame and fear. Still, He followed me, from the crack house to the treatment center, time and time again, waiting patiently just outside the door until I finally let Him in."
This is the story of human tragedy, brokenness, redemption and healing. It reminds us that we are human, and that is hard and wondrous and beautiful. It offers healing to any comer, addicted or not, because it reminds us that no matter our circumstances, there is help and healing to be found in community and in faith. It is important to own and tell our stories and to hear the stories of others, and to offer a helping hand along the way.
There are no illusions about the struggles addicted people and their families suffer in the face of addictions, and that in honestly confronting ourselves we find our place of recognition and hope.
Book Review: Broken Summary: 5 Stars
This is a very good book and highly recommended for family members and others dealing with addiction. Also good for addicts to read. Very informative and I have recommended it to many others. Good insight to what the addict goes through and the effects on family etc.
Book Review: Broken Summary: 2 Stars
This book was disappointing because it is more self-serving than insightful. I was extremely put off by the author's description of his father's reaction when he gave cocaine to his younger brother, as if that was a brotherly activity that his father had no stake in. Sorry, Cope, you may be better, but not quite healed, yet.
Book Review: Broken Summary: 5 Stars
This book is a must read for anyone who is trying to understand the struggle of someone who is suffering from addiction to drugs and/or alcohol. A very powerful message of hope and transformation.
