Book Review: Hef the disaster
Summary: 4 Stars

This book delivers on many levels. It shows how pathetically crude Hefner has become over the years. His bedtime antics are fully described, in all their sad details. Meanwhile, quite a few of the live-in girlfriends are credibly portrayed as working every available angle---from virtual prostitution to selling access to Hef's parties-- to get ahead and climb the greasy LA pole of celebrity and minor fame. Meanwhile, our heroine-author pretends to have been oblivious to all this sleaze until late in the game. The book reads a little bit like Terry Southern's great "Candy," but without Terry's hilarious deadpan humor and sarcasm. This is an unintentionally fabulous book about the postmodern entertainment/publishing business. Next up---OJ's days as a Mansion pool boy.

Book Review: Hell Hath No Fury
Summary: 3 Stars

Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned

"Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned" could be another title for the book. She lost a power struggle with Holly, didn't get all the cash, gifts and recognition she felt entitled to (simply for being beautiful, not for any real work or effort), and so she wrote a bitter, often contradictory memoir of her life in the Mansion.

That said, it is also an entertaining read. It's full of drama and tidbits of life at Playboy. The resentful passages are easy to see through, and thus ignore. Aside from that, and the poor grammar, it can be fun and informative; a soap opera based upon fact, viewed through a very skewed and scorned lens. My wife loved it, and read it through in a single sitting (it's a quick 250 pages).

So 3 stars for the drama, factoids and fun. The anger, misstatements and contradictions are fairly easy to ignore. I feel sad for Hef, the other girls (past and present), and the staff that she disses, it is a total betrayal of trust (very surprised he doesn't have the girls sign confidentiality agreements). But for those of us on the outside of this world, it's kinda fun.

Book Review: Horrible
Summary: 1 Stars

This book was an atrocious attempt at trying to remain relevant after Hef booted St. James out of the house. Her publisher really did her a disservice in pushing this book onto the public. From attacking the other girls to attempting to paint herself in a different light, failing miserably, I would recommend this book only for a good laugh due to the inconsistencies. Holly, Bridget, and Kendra are desperate fame seeking whores while she truly loves Hef in one breath, the next she's talking about the fit she pitched when he cut their allowance for parties from 2k to about 500 because the girls were pocketing the cash in addition to their "allowance" for living there. Calling the other girls conniving cheats while admitting a chapter or two away the frequency with which she cheated on Hef. Overall, the book was boring minutia from someone who really could have just stayed quiet or auditioned to be part of the THS on Hef and come out looking better.

Book Review: Huh
Summary: 2 Stars

I bought the book used off Am because I wrote a horror novel featuring bunnies and wanted to know if I was close, as it turns out nope not even a little lol. The book Bunny Tales could also be titled the sad hookers story or anything in that ilk. I dont know whether I was more horiffied by the overall ickiness of what these girls will do for room and board and the same cash handouts that their counterparts receive in hotel rooms or by the use of great literary quotes which jarred badly with this tale and the lack of editing therein.

And the thing is now I AM interested. What in the hell would make a beautiful woman who made it through law school and who might have had an amazing life end up approaching forty with nothing more going for her than past slut stats and being forced to write a book like this for whatever cash she could get?

I mean think of some of the glam girls on CNN, Fox etc and she could have had it all and instead...ugh its sad. Now what? I think if she wants to try writing again she should tell the truthful story of life on the downhill skid, what happens to these poor women after the bars close and the rich old men move on to another younger fresher model. That would make a good read and if Ms. St James reads her amazon reviews I encourage her to give it a shot, that and maybe the public defender or the D.A.'s office and try to start making a comeback from the Mt. Everest of lousy life choices.

Book Review: I beleive half of what she said.
Summary: 3 Stars

Interesting tale, but like another reviewer said, save your money and borrow it from someone else. It was interesting that the author claimed to always be the innocent one in all the drama and scandal. I found that hard to believe. Regarding other things she said seemed to make sense and definitely revealed life at the Playboy Mansion as less glamorous than you'd think. It really annoyed me when she complained about Hef not paying her student loans. Had she finished taking the bar exam and pursued a career in law she would've been able to pay them herself. She lost most of her credibility when she said that and it was right in the beginning of the book.
