Are you a history reader? Well don't skip this when you turn your studies toward the exploration of the Americas. The book is Cabeza de Vaca's report of his adventures as they relate to the disaster known as the Narvaez Expedition in 1527-28.
The book holds a bit of everything: hurricanes, Indian troubles, incompetent officers, lost and rafting the Gulf of Mexico, shipwrecked on the Texas coast, more or less enslaved by the primitive Karankawa Indians, and finally an inconceivable messianic march to Freedom.
The other reviews mention most of the story so I'll just add two snippets that struck my mind.
First: In a most boneheaded manner Narvaez sends his ships away as his expedition goes a field. When the expedition is forced to retreat due to the elements, hostile natives and sickness: Guess what? No ships! Double Wow! That is really the catalyst for the disaster that follows.
Second: Once Cabeza de Vaca starts for Mexico in earnest on his way home after the raftwreck near Galveston and after living with the natives for several years he takes up faith healing as a means of survival and movement. Seemingly healing the natives at will with his prayers, hand laying and even raising one supposed dead man. A mass of natives follow him from village to village as though he were some messiah figure.
The book is tight and easy read and can be finished in a night or two.
