590 pages chronicling water rights and resources in the American West must be a cure for insomnia, right? Wrong.Marc Reisner's classic text grabs the reader from the off and rarely lets go, and then not for long. The author demonstrates how the American dream in the west has been, literally, built on sand, shows how the west's great subterranean water resources are being drained to exhaustion, points out the economic madness of subsidising massive population growth into what, in a rational world, would be desert. (The book also has the advantage of finally making you realise what on earth "Chinatown" was all about...)
Over the ages desert populations have come but always gone - will California prove any different?
