Book Review: "Exciting romantic western!"

When twenty year old Desi and her wealthy family travel west to explore the 1858 wild Texas territory, they meet up with trouble. Her parents are gunned down by Comancheros, and Desi and her identical twin sister are kidnapped.
Raped and abused and passed around, the sisters suffer a terrible fate, but Desi never loses her fighting spirit. When supposed rescue comes from men willing to pay a ransom, it looks like only one of the sisters will be saved, and it is Desi.
But Desi is not saved, she is used as a whore for a year by her so called guardian and his banker friends. When Desi and some women from town (including the sherriff's wife) are kidnapped again by different outlaws, the Texas Rangers get involved in the rescue.
When Caine Allen, a Texas Ranger and a member of the Hell's Eight(a group of friends of some notoriety that all live together on a large tract of Texas land) gets a look at the beautiful Desi fighting off her kidnappers, he is instantly captivated. Her fighting nature and fiery spirit intrigues him. When Caine sees how Desi fears and despises her guardian, he agrees to marry her in order to protect her.
Of course Desi, after all the abuse she's been through, has an intense mistrust and dislike of men. But something about Caine's nonjudgemental and honorable nature warms her heart. Caine will protect anything and anyone he holds dear, and it takes Desi a while to realize that. Will Caine be able to win her trust and mend her damaged psyche? Will Desi get over her fears of being unworthy of a decent man's love and respect? Will Caine realize that he is worthy of blueblood Desi's love? Will Desi ever see her twin sister again? And what does the man who was her guardian and his cronies really want with Desi? These are some of the questions answered in the first book in what looks to be a promising new series (Hell's Eight).
I enjoyed this book, and while I thought it was a good read, I didn't think it was great. Parts of it moved pretty slowly but that may be because it is the first book of a series and a lot of it was spent establishing the background of the story, the setting, and the various characters. The story picked up the pace toward the end, and of course left some questions unanswered that will surely be addressed in the sequel(s).
The love scenes between Desi and Caine were intense and erotic, but there weren't so many that they took over the whole story--the plot came first. Desi and Caine were likable and believable characters, and I was hoping what started as a marriage of convenience would develop into true love.
There are some intriguing supporting characters in the book, and their stories promise to be exciting, too. All in all, a very satisfying beginning for the new Hell's Eight series. If you enjoyed Sarah McCarty's Promises series, I think you will enjoy this, too!
